Science Fair 2005

As we head into the 2007 science fair season, read what students wrote last year about their science fair experience . . .

My First Science Fair

I did my first science fair project this year. I did not know anything about a science fair or what to do. My teacher was so exited to tell us about it and when she told us. I hade so many ideas in my mind like ”will plants keep a fish tank cleaner?” or “which deodorant lasts longer?” In the end I decided that I would test whether pasteurized cow milk lasts longer than unpasterized goat milk. I got my poster done and I was more relaxed. When we got to the other school I thought I can't believe that my teacher is making me do this. I was the last person to be judged and when they asked me “what is the difference between cow milk and goat milk?” I froze and could not say anything. I get to go on to the district fair, though, and so does the rest of the class.

Science Fairs

At a science fair, kids get the chance to show their knowledge in science. First they pick a topic they are interested in and design an experiment testing it. Starting their experiment and gathering the data they need is the next step. The last step is putting all the data they have collected together and creating a poster board stating their name, a title, a problem statement, an abstract (summarizing their project, stating how they came up with the idea for the project and so on), their hypothesis, the materials they used, the procedures they used, their data, results, conclusions, and their ideas for future research.

When the day of the science fair comes along, kids are required to stand by their project until the judges, usually two, judge their work. When they are done the kids are allowed to wander around and depending on how many kids are participating in the science fair, the projects will either get placed that day or sometime that week. If a kid places they will automatically go to regional. From there, you go to state, than nationals, and lastly to internationals.
