Things to Do in Los Lunas

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

A 57,191 acre refuge home to wintering waterfowl and cranes. Situated just off Interstate 25 midway between Albuquerque and Las Cruces (just over an hour drive from Sandhill), Socorro is the nearest town to the refuge. To reach the refuge from Socorro, drive eight miles south on I-25 to exit 139, continue east one-fourth mile on US 380 to the flashing signal at San Antonio, turn right onto Old Highway 1, continue south nine miles to the Visitor Center.

Daniel Fernandez Memorial Park
This large park has a recreation center, adult softball field, football field, basketball court, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, gazebo, and public restrooms. 1103 Hwy 314 SW

Los Lunas Farmer’s Market

Local farmers, home gardeners and local producers of breads, jams, jellies bring their fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, eggs and honey to the market on Tuesdays from June 1st until October 5th. Meeting at River Park at 1660 Main Street at the river from 4 to 7 on Tuesday afternoon under the cottonwoods is a summer pleasure not to be missed. Skate Park

The skate park in Valencia County is located in Heritage Park. The park features 15,000 sq ft of skateable area. Admission is free. Heritage park also has soccer fields, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and a walking trail. Hours are 8:00 am till dark. The Heritage Park Skate Park is a skate at your own risk facility. Please know your ability and skate accordingly. Wearing a helmet is mandated if you are under the age of 18. Other protective gear is strongly recommended, including: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist and ankle protection.   • North Sandia Crest Trail – Enjoy a moderate day hike on this 7 mi trail.
  • Sandia Man Caves – An easy hike to a cave that contains skeletal remains and other artifacts from the Ice Age. Trail begins in Placitas, about 30 minutes NE of Albuquerque.

Visit this state park M-Su 8am-5pm to enjoy a nature walk.

Sandia Peak Ski & Tramway

Enjoy a trip on the world’s longest aerial tram any time of year. Pack a picnic and take in the views, or have a meal at Sandiago’s Mexican Grill located at the peak. The tram runs daily from 9am – 9pm. Another option in the summer is to take the scenic chair lift. Once up top there are plenty of activities such as renting a mountain bike or taking a beautiful walk or hike. In the winter time take advantage of the opportunity to ski.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The world’s largest hot air balloon event takes place in Albuquerque every October. Be sure to plan in advance if you want to partake as the city books up quickly during this time. Go to http://www.balloonfiesta.com/ for schedule and info.

Blue Hole

Just East of Santa Rosa, take a day trip (approx 2 hours from Sandhill) to cool off at this clear, deep swimming hole.
The Blue Hole is located just South of Route 66, the main street in Santa Rosa. Turn off of Route 66 at the sign for the hospital. Go about two blocks south of the hospital and turn left. Follow the signs to the Blue Hole.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The primary attraction of this park is the impressive underground cave system, which you can explore on a self-guided tour. In the park you can go for a scenic hike and in the summer evenings at dusk watch the colony of Mexican free tail bats come out to feed. The caverns are 304 miles from Albuquerque.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

For a day packed full of gorgeous New Mexico/Colorado scenery take a ride on this train. You can depart out of Chama, NM and ride the train halfway to Osier, or take the full 64 mile ride to Antonito, CO. The Chama terminal is 165 miles away from Albuquerque.

Jemez Springs

An easy hour’s drive from Albuquerque, this is a great get-away spot. This charming village offers beautiful scenery, and great outdoors activities including fishing, hiking, and swimming (in the river or in hot springs).

Madrid

Located on the Scenic Turquoise Trail, Hwy 14, between Albuquerque and Santa Fe this quaint town is a wonderful place to stop and explore.

Sky City/Acoma Pueblo

Discover the traditional Native American culture and living history of Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. The Pueblo of Acoma “Sky City” is located approximately one hour west of Albuquerque.

Taos

Visit Taos, a friendly town nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, for a fantastic year-round get-away. Take a stroll in the historic town plaza, and enjoy fine dining opportunities in a community rich in arts and culture. Visit the Taos Pueblo (A UNESCO World Heritage Site), drive out to see the Gorge Bridge, or stop by the Taos Earthship community.
